No Complaints About Tougher Terrain

Today’s 12 miles kicked my butt! It has been a while since I’ve been challenged on the trail like this. The entire day I could not gain any elevation without immediately losing it and then some, only to climb back up again. I had to put in two and a half times more effort, comparable to swimming upstream. This terrain is entirely different than that of southern Vermont, roots, rocks, dizzying ups and downs. Initially I enjoyed the change of scenery, literally speaking but towards the end of the day I grew weary as each step revealed another seemingly needless descent. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful sunny day. Since the shelter, I had not seen or heard any human soul but song birds kept me company. And the most traffic I endured was a frog leaping into my path and cautiously past.
